The NSU Halmos College of Arts and Sciences graduate programs covers a diverse selection of subject areas, allowing our students to think experientially as well as experimentally. Students can channel their curiosity into a diverse selection of master's degrees and Ph.D.'s. This wide array of programs allows inquisitive students to develop into thriving future professionals, continue onto a Ph.D. program or grow their professional careers.

The Office of Graduate Admissions handles all aspects of graduate enrollment and admissions for the NSU Halmos College of Arts & Sciences. Admission to the NSU Halmos College Master’s and Ph.D. programs is highly competitive and all applications are individually reviewed by Academic Committees. Admission is only offered to applicants who meet both qualitative and quantitative criteria. All required documentation must be received before an admission decision can be offered.

How do I submit an Application for my program of interest?

Prospective students can visit the link: Graduate Application along with a non-refundable $50 application fee.

How do I submit my Official Transcripts?

Applicants will need to request official copies of their transcripts from ALL educational institutions attended since high school graduation. The NSU Graduate Application portal will notify students of when transcripts and other application documents have been received.

*Please keep in mind that ALL international transcripts will need to be evaluated by the World Education Services (WES) or the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES).

Does the Halmos College require a Graduate Record Examination (GRE) for Admission?

All master’s programs and the Ph.D. in Conflict Analysis & Resolution program within the Halmos College of Arts & Sciences will NOT require the GRE test as part of admission requirements. If students choose to have the scores submitted for review the Admissions team will pair them with your application for committee review.

The Ph.D. in Oceanography/Marine Biology is the only exception and will still require the GRE for admission.

When are the Application Deadlines for my program?

Please consult the HCAS Graduate Admissions office for exact details on the timeline of your program’s application. Admissions decisions are made on a continuous basis, so it’s important to keep in mind course registration periods can be open before the application deadlines close.

Applications received after the deadline must be resubmitted for the next term. International applicants wishing to study on-site should complete their application 4 months before the start of the term.

Do I need a Major Advisor prior to acceptance into a Graduate Program?

NO.

T he NSU Halmos College of Arts & Sciences master's degree programs do not require that you find a major advisor prior to acceptance into the program.

However, an advisor will not be assigned to you. Therefore, we do encourage that you review our faculty profiles to get an idea of who you may be interested in working with. This will help you decide whether your career goals can be met by choosing to pursue your graduate studies with NSU.

Do I need to find a major advisor prior to acceptance into the Ph.D. program?

YES!

The Ph.D. in Marine Biology/Oceanography does require that you find a major advisor prior to entrance into the doctoral program.

Your major advisor must be a full-time faculty member in the NSU Halmos College of Arts & Sciences within the Department of Marine and Environmental Science. The major advisor needs to write a detailed letter of support, explaining that they will serve as your major advisor and how you will receive at least three years of funding to support your studies.

*The Ph.D. in Conflict Analysis and Resolution does NOT require prospective students to find a major advisor prior to entrance.

Can I defer my acceptance to another semester?

YES!

Students who were admitted to the NSU Halmos College of Arts & Sciences graduate programs may defer their acceptance for up to three semesters from the date of original acceptance.

What is the transfer of credit policy?

Master's students may transfer up to six credits of previous graduate course work. Course work must replicate NSU Halmos College of Arts & Sciences offerings in the major field of interest or must clearly be closely related. Students should submit requests for transfer credits in writing to the program Academic Department. Requests should accompany documentation indicating the subject matter and that the transfer credits were of graduate-level from accredited institutions. This can consist of the course syllabus, transcripts, and/or the course description from the professor.

Ph.D. students may transfer 15-30 graduate course credits from prior graduate programs in the same discipline as the Ph.D. degree aspired to. Transfer courses must be either be reasonable duplicates of courses offered at NSU or clearly in the applicable Ph.D. field of interest. Students should submit requests for transfer credits in writing with documentation indicating the subject matter and that the transfer credits were of graduate-level from accredited institutions. This can consist of the course syllabus, transcripts, and/or the course description from the professor.

TRANSFER CREDITS FROM HALMOS COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

Nova Southeastern University has no control over the acceptance of course credits at other institutions. Credits earned at NSU's Halmos College are transferable to other institutions at the discretion of the receiving school.

INTERNAL CREDIT FROM ANOTHER NSU AWARDED DEGREE OR PROGRAM

Students are required to consult with their advisor regarding the transfer of credit policy in their specific program of study. The course(s) must be at the same degree level (e.g., master’s to master’s) and cannot exceed 12 credits.  The GPA and credits from the prior work will be applied to both degrees.  No credits can be transferred from a previously awarded degree or certificate.

Where can I find more information about requirements for international students?

For international students wishing to study at NSU's Halmos College of Arts & Sciences for study, the student I-20 visa may be issued only upon completion of all admission requirements. Therefore, international students are urged to be sensitive to requirements prior to applying to the program.
